Uncanned Bread

My wife bought some canned bread the other day. We had seen some posts around the webs last month that they were selling canned bread in Japan; but low and behold there was some right here in ‘merica at the local Bloom grocery store. Naturally, we had to try it.

The initial thought was for our “bunker” that is prepared for the inevitable zombpocalypse (you know.. when the dead will rise and and walk da earth in search of brainzzz… You do have a zombie plan right? Right!?), but we figured we should open a can and try it first. After all, its $3.99 a can, which is an expensive proposition if you want to stock appropriately.

Canned Bread

Behold, the can. That’s right, New England’s Finest!

Directions

Here are the directions on the can. I love the line “…gently push loaf … with a spoon”

Top

The top of the can has been removed, revealing the carbo-goodness waiting inside

Pushing the loaf

Here I am “gently pushing the loaf”

Uncanned

The uncanned loaf.

Ready to slice

Here it is, out of the can. Ready to be sliced. I was surprised at how moist it is. I don’t know exactly what I was expecting; but moist isn’t something I normally associate with bread.

sliced

So my wife, I, the teen and the tween all gave it a try. The consensus? Tastes roughly like ass.

Though with strong hints of brown sugar and rye. In retrospect, it tasted a little like beef jerky. Though hardly anything like actual… you know… bread!

It was the molasses and rye combo that I believe caused the ass-like flavoring. Did it have brown sugar? Either way, gross and *not* included in the bunker stockpile. Sorry, B&M, I tried! No cholesterol, low fat, canned bread… it had such potential!

Yes, it was molasses not brown sugar. I stand corrected :o )
