She Wants Revenge, and I love it!!
This band seemed to come out of nowhere recently for me. I cant really give them total props for originality, but I find their lyrics very refreshing in a twisted simple way.
I often refer to this album as Music for people with safe words. I enjoy the expression of a relationship thats necessarily frustrating.
The theme is as if the writer is delighted in fact that his relationship is in some sort of happy disarray.
Some of their music reminds me of Bauhaus, some Joy Division, and some have the pleasant electronic harmonies similar to Gary Numan. The vocals for me tend to waiver back and forth between Martyn Ware of Human League and David Bowie. As mentioned before, they get about a 4 for originality, but a 10 for a joyful, poppy sound..
This album is one of the very few released these days that I can easily play from end to end. Rather infectious, especially with the words. The lyrics get a 12 on a scale of 1 to 10 for phrases like “she smells like 2am”, “its cold out”, “but her popsicle melts” “I want to whisper in your ear”, “I wanna F%$G tear you apart!”.
I was able to see the video for their release Tear You Apart the other day and even found that rather enjoyable. They manage to tie in an abstract theme of alien dating with the already kinky lyrics.
All in all a refreshing new breath of air from circa 1981 (but not really). Hope you enjoy.
