Serenity Review
I’ve just reviewed the new sci-fi movie Serenity. You can read it below, or do yourself a favor and run to your closest theater and see it now, then come back, read the review, and post a comment about what you thought

If you get the impression that this review is slightly biased.. well, you’d be exactly right – it’s awesome!”
Serenity is the movie version of the spectacular (but short lived) TV show Firefly. Firefly, like Serenity, was created and written by Joss Whedon the creator of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel. Additionally, Joss wrote the screenplays for Toy Story, Alien: Resurrection, and several episodes of Roseanne (quite a spread of styles!)
Unfortunately Fox dropped the show after only airing half of the filmed episodes (out of order, no less!) even though it won an emmy for special effects and was gaining a strong following. There was such a strong fan outcry that, even though no networks would pick up the rest of the series (shame on you Sci-Fi channel!!) Universal signed a three picture deal… and now Sci-Fi has picked up and is showing all of the TV episodes.
The movie Serenity picks up several months after the Firefly series left off. There are actually a trilogy of comic books that bridge the gap, but fans of the series won”t have a problem getting right into it and people who have never been exposed to this incredible universe before should be able to immediately get into it as well.
I don”t want to get into the plot at all, because the movie is so well written and so much fun to watch, I want you to enjoy it completely unspoiled. I”m sure you”ve seen a few commercials for it anyway.
All you need to know is that it is sci-fi, but not too weird or out there (no aliens), and it”s kinda western, but not overly so or cliche (no ten gallon hats) and everybody reads and swears in chinese (yeah, sounds odd but it works).
Where Star Wars” wooden dialog and frequently whiny actors were propped up by cutting edge special effects and a classic good vs. evil storyline, Serenity”s clever, witty, and touching dialog is complimented by cutting edge technology, intriguing plotlines, and incredible acting. Not to say that I don”t love Star Wars, but after seeing Serenity you realize how much more it could have been.
A lot of people are talking about how strong the writing is and how breathtaking the visuals are, and it”s for good reason. This is simply an amazing film. It was made for only $40 million but looks like three times that. If it pulls in $80 million internationally, then Universal will make the next one! So — shut down the computer, and go see this movie. You won”t regret it!
If you like science fiction.. or if you like western.. or if you like action.. or if you like comedy – then this movie is for you. Serenity is NOT family friendly (they are serious about that PG-13 rating), but it has something for everybody of age (my wife actually cried).
Even if you”ve never been into sci-fi, Serenity is so dynamic it”s worth a try.
If you go see it, let me know what you thought by commenting below.
Enjoy the show and Keep flying…
