“Rolling Stones” of Modern Rock Depeche Mode have hit a home run with their latest release Precious from their forthcoming album Playing the Angel.

Being an avid fan of Depeche Mode since 1987, I was eager to hear what changes they have made to their latest sound. One thing that can be said about Depeche Mode is that they have always tried and succeeded to stay ahead of the current mainstream noise. After 25 years and thirteen albums, Depeche Mode still reigns as the pioneers of modern music.

Listening to Precious is reminiscent to the melody of their 1990 smash hit Enjoy the Silence (a personal favorite), with a little more feeling, and a fuller sound. I have found that the song is quite beautiful [and] tends to grow on you. I wasn’t as affected by the song after the first few times I listened to it, but after a few days, I found myself repeatedly playing the song like an obsessed teenager.

Depeche Mode’s last few albums have been slow to establish themselves as hits (all albums since violator). Let’s hope that Precious is a precursor to the sound of Playing the Angel. It would be nice to see the band turn out another several albums of decent quality. If so, they may have a huge hit on their hands and a bright future.
