Review of Finding Neverland

Being such a tremendous fan of Peter Pan (the book, the movie, the Disney feature), as well as ALL things Tinkerbell, I fully intended to love this movie. I did, however, underestimate the script, the actors, and the charm of the events that led to the creation of the play Peter Pan.

This movie was unspeakably amazing. I felt an immediate attachment to all of the characters, good and (unintentionally) bad. While I love Johnny Depp, you can never be sure what quality of movie he will star in, and he definitely made an excellent choice on this one. I cannot now imagine any other actor portraying the author J.M. Barrie. Kate Winslet as the widowed mother of four rambunctious boys was both a magical and heartbreaking performance. Dustin Hoffman was a wonderful surprise, and added a humor to this movie that kept me laughing.

While I laughed heartily, I also wept uncontrollably. For only the third time in my life (Steel Magnolias and Ray), I was so swept away by the performances of this completely spectacular ensemble cast that I could not control my tears, soaking Wendell”s sleeve beyond belief. (Sorry, baby. I didn”t know I would need tissues for this one…)

This is possibly Johnny Depp”s greatest performance ever, and in my heart, Kate Winslet has never been better – take that, Titanic!

I recommend this movie to all, whether or not you believe in fairies, because I suspect upon leaving the theater that you feel a sense of magic that you did not have before. And you just may find yourself watching the shadows, looking for a little trail of light, fluttering in the darkness…
